| Not gonna lie, looking for a title card made me feel a bit like a pedo. |
What is it: High school student Subaru Hisagawa decides to coach a young girls' basketball club after being forced by his aunt. Based on the light novel written by Sagu Aoyama with illustrations by Tinkle, this sports comedy was adapted into a 12 episode anime by Project No. 9 and Studio Blanc in 2011.
Why is it special: Basically little girls playing basketball. Really, you shouldn't be expecting anything more. Great for any lolicons out there but for everyone else there isn't much on the table for this title.
Plus One:
Little fan service: I was quite happy to see that Ro-Kyu-Bu had fairly little fan service. Perhaps many were thinking this title would be full of panty shots or compromising situations, Ro-Kyu-Bu had very little. This of course could be disappointing to any lolicons out there.
Voice acting: Overall I thought the voice acting by everyone was well done. While it may not have been an outstanding performance by anyone it was done well. Each actor seemed to have a voice that fit the characters and their personality traits.
Minus One:
Basketball: For a show that is supposed to be about basketball, it seems to forget about its main topic. While there are scenes where the girls are learning about basketball it seems to be more of a background topic. Even during the basketball matches, basketball seems to take a backseat to some other topic at hand.
Whiny characters: As usual the main protagonist, Subaru, is rather whiny. While he does cool down on the whiny later on, it still persists. His main complaint is trying to figure out if he wants to have anything to do with basketball.
All for One:
Overall, Ro-Kyu-Bu isn't something to write home about. At best I would say it is a time killer but does not offer much more in terms of plot or even characters. There are some good moments which kind of redeem the show but nothing spectacular.
