Kami-sama no Memo-cho

A neet detective. A speaker for the dead. In the hopes of bringing closure to those in need, those living have to suffer knowing the cruel fate those died left behind. Can this speaker for the dead actually bring closure or is it just another hoax? Find out after the break.

What is it: Kami-sama no Memo-chou (Heaven's Memo Pad) is about a transfer student trying to get used to life moving around. Upon transferring to his newest school, he meets a girl who introduces him to a group of NEETs (Not Employed in Education or Training). Based on the light novel series written by Hikaru Sugii and illustrations done by Mel Kishida. 12 episodes were produced by J.C. Staff in 2011.

Why is it special: Upon first glance, this series seems like it could be very similar to Durarara. Durarara was a series about a boy transferring to a new city but gets sucked into the seedy underworld controlling the town. Kami no Memo tries to differentiate itself from Durarara by having a NEET detective but ultimately fails.

Plus One:
Resemblance to Durarara: If you liked Durarara then this series may seem eerily familiar to you, at least the beginning portion.

Cases: Basically Kami no Memo concerns itself with a different case every few episode. Generally most of the cases are interesting and eventful.

Art: Although some may think that the art is kind of bland, I personally think it worked for the series.

Minus One:
Slow: Overall the series is very slow. It takes awhile before getting any traction or momentum.

Not unique: As mentioned earlier, Kami no Memo is rather similar to Durarara. Unfortunately it just seems more like a bad rip off and doesn't bring anything new or exciting.

The death: Near the end of the show there is someone who tries to kill themselves. This actually put a very bad taste in my mouth. Not only did it feel out of place for the show, it also seemed arbitrary.

All for One:
Overall I would have to say this series could have been decent but what ruined it for me was it trying to become something different at the end. Kami no Memo tried to hit home with a close character dying but in the end failed to even do that. At best it is a generic boy lost in the city story.
