Yuru Yuri

What seemed to be just another generic yuri (girl-love) story seemed to contain more. With every cute character designs, was there something a bit more to the show? Or was it all just plain fanservice? Jump the break to find out.

What is it: A show about 4 girls who decide to start an 'amusement' club on one of the girls whim. Based on the manga of the same name by Namori, 12 episodes were produced by Dogakobo in 2011.

Why is it special: As mentioned earlier, what seems to be just a standard yuri tale turns to be more of a great comedy than a yuri tale.

Plus One:
The comedy: Yuru Yuri is not light on comedy. For a show that is supposed to boast girls loving each other, it seems to place comedy as it's highest priority. There are times where the comedy does dry up but it is usually to set up the next big laugh.

The commercial songs: Before and after the commercial break there would be one of the girls running with a song playing in the background. Each girl featured had their own theme song. These songs really stood out to me because they were very enjoyable and sounded like they could be the theme songs to each girl if Yuru Yuri was a fighting game.

The cast: What could have just been another generic show about 4 girls doing 'club' like activities turned out better because they introduced many more girls. Of the 4 (supposedly) main characters only 3 really stood out. The other just kind of faded into the background...

The forgotten one: Akarin, probably the forgotten character, has to be my favorite character of the show. It was tormenting when the show would actively poke fun at her lack of presence. Despite being forgotten quite often, she really stole the show for me.

Minus One:
The plot: There really isn't much of a plot in simple terms. At it's basics it is just another school show about girls going about their school day.

The comedy: Although I did mention earlier that the comedy is generally good overall, it is slow in getting to the punchline and for some this may be a deterrent if they are the type to need rapid fire punchlines.

All for one:
While it may seem like I don't have much to say about the show it's because it is a simple show through and through. This could be interpreted in different ways but I enjoyed it because it was simple, it didn't really get confused with what it was doing. There maybe other shows that do things better than Yuru Yuri but I thoroughly enjoyed this show.  If anything, I would actually like to see another season because the time we spent with the girls of the Amusement club felt far too short.

By the power of Grayskull you shall not be forgotten Akarin!
