R-15

Let's get this out of the way. I must hate myself for watching this. The pain each week that I went through must have been some sort of self inflicted torture. How can one create such a poor excuse for a show? Well jump the break to find out.

What is it: Taketo Akutagawa is a boy who attends a school for geniuses. While everyone excels at their own speciality, Taketo is considered a genius for his literature, erotica literature that is. In the hopes of becoming the greatest writer in the world, Taketo struggles to create new stories that can please everyone while still attending school. R-15 is a light novel written by Hiroyuki Fushimi and illustrated by Takuya Fujima. It was adapted into an anime in 2011 by AIC who produced 12 episodes.

Why is it special: R-15 is one of the few shows for Nico Nico's first anime lineup. Nico Nico airs new anime a few hours after airing in Japan with English subtitles. Other than that there is nothing special about this pice of garbage. In fact I would say that this show tarnished Nico Nico's first lineup because of how bad this show is.

Plus One:
Nothing: Seriously. There is nothing redeeming about this show.

Minus One:
Where to start? There is so much wrong with this show that I have a hard time trying to fully understand where it went wrong. The characters are annoying, the plot sucks, the setting is lame, I could not hate a show more right now than R-15.

Let's try and reorganize a bit. First and foremost, the plot is the lamest excuse for a story. A high school student who is considered to be a genius for writing erotica? Talk about a weak start already. Pretty sure anyone can expect abundant fanservice due to the erotica. Yet despite supposedly being about writing, it rarely remembers that writing is supposed to be the main plot device. Instead it uses writing as a way for the main character to think up scenes of his classmates in compromising situations.

The writing is terrible at best. Each scene is basically set up for one of two things. The first is to try and get viewers attached to the characters, more on that later. The second is for the blatant fanservice, if you can really call it that. Many moments are set up so that the girls end up in some compromising pose yet in an attempt to boost DVD sales, they use the dreaded light bar censor. Apparently no one thought about how censors work because they end up covering more than 90% of the screen when they try to censor something. Towards the end I was grateful because it meant I didn't have to deal with the panty shots being shoved in my face.

The characters have to be some of the most poorly written in some time. Despite being geniuses each character seems to suffer from the dreaded 'Why do I do what I do?'. I find this mentality to be annoying in just one character but when the entire cast is like this is boarders on me throwing my laptop across the room. Each character was needy and whinny to the point of being worse than a five year old in a toy store.

All for One:
My bet is that if anyone was interested in watching R-15 they wouldn't get more than halfway through the series due to how bad it is. For 25 minutes each week it felt more like 5 hours because of how bored and frustrated I was with the show. I would even zone out while watching it and then when I focused back realize that the show hadn't gotten any father than before. Why you might ask did I end up watching this show? Because I wanted to see how bad it could get. My answer is that this R-15 really did end up getting that bad. From the bad art and bad animation, to the bad story, everything was just a pile of failure. I would not recommend anyone to watch this show even if they are interested in the fanservice because it isn't worth it.
